In case you've forgotten...

In the event you’ve been living out on Pluto for the last hundred years or similarly cut off from the civilized world, I just wanted to remind you that there’s an outfit out in the swamps of Louisiana called the McIlhenny Company that produces a red chili hot sauce called Tabasco.

While the McIlhenny company and Tabasco have been around for a couple hundred of years, literally, and their red hot sauce is duly famous, I wanted to make sure you all know that McIlhenny doesn’t just make “red” anymore.

In addition to the classic red chili sauce, McIlhenny makes a green jalapeño based sauce, a garlic flavored red sauce, a habanero sauce, and a smoked chipotle pepper sauce. Of the lot, my favorites are the habanero and the chipotle. The habanero isn’t so hot that it requires a waiver to eat, but still packs enough of a punch that you know it’s there plus it has a nice fruity taste (I’m not a big fan of heat for heat’s sake. I’d rather eat a milder hot sauce that had actual flavor, rather than a blistering concoction with no discernable taste.) The chipotle, on the other hand, is just so damn good that if I didn’t ration myself, I’d go through a bottle a week.

More over, as I mentioned with the Rooster juice, all of these Tabasco products do not require refrigeration, so they are safe to take into the field (or back to Pluto.)

Back in the day (I'm a retired LTC with 30+ yrs so you can figure what day!) the McIlhenny Company was a very pro military outfit. You could write them and provide a military address and they would send you a free bottle of Tabasco (they only made red then) and this really clever ballistic nylon carrier for the bottle. It was designed to go one one's LBE but that is a no-go from the start so I used it to protect the bottle from slams and bangs of living in a ruck. The case was very well made by the Bianchi Co., well know for their holsters and other gun leather products. Might be worth a try to see if they still have some kind of military support activities going on.

We had this stuff on every table in the chow halls, along with plenty of Heinz products. You had to watch carefully when you used the 57 sauce, as bottles with only a few fingers left were often boobytrapped by being topped off with Tabasco and shaken well- the color change was nearly imperceptible but the altered viscosity meant trying to pour a little wound up covering your burger with napalm! I got to where I liked it, though I poured carefully...

An heir to the McIlhenny co. was a marine killed on Guadalcanal which is just one reason why they have always been pro military.

"red hot sauce....." Tobasco sauce is mad from tobasco peppers. Red Hot Sauce is made with cayenne peppers. The only real Red Hot Sauce is Frank's original recipe marketed by Reckitt-Benicker, Inc. This is the sauce that made Buffalo Wings popular.

Take a tablespoon of Tobasco, and TASTE it. Forget about the heat, does it TASTE good?

Then take a tablespoon of Frank's Red Hot Sauce and TASTE it. I GUARANTEE it tastes GREAT!

Just my humble opinion, but if you want just heat, Tobasco is for you. If you want heat that tastes good, go with the Franks.

Tabasco is an old friend, and was a constant companion on patrols. Hard routine required no cooking, the only to make stuff edible was a liberal dose of the good red sauce.

Dont leave home with out it!
