My boy solomon slipped me this link that shows the picture above of a Marine infantryman using Magpul PMAGs (30-round) for his rifle. He's also got a full loadout of them in his chest rig.
I'm going to do some official inquiries, but as far as I know the PMAG isn't standard issue gear for Marine infantry units. This looks to me like a unit purchase — and a smart one at that. I've also seen Soldiers equipped with PMAGs in Afghanistan (see below), despite the fact that PEO Soldier recently announced the fielding of a .
Also be sure to take a look at the video I shot of the EMA Tactical countdown magazine, another spin on the "know your load" mantra.

re: 1st picture….I didn’t think Marines wore shoulder patches on their utilities. That guy looks like an Afgan, as does the bearded guy behind him. Also, I read an article recently in a gun mag that stated that pmags were being evaluated by our goverment supply wienies for issue to our troops.
If you’re referring to the patches on the shoulder pockets, its velcro to attach IR reflective tape for night ops. Not very effective because it would always fall off and get lost, thats why my unit would put IR chemlights in our shoulder pockets. On the topic of these magazines, I think its genius especially if they’re more durable than the standard issue mags. I’d like to see some translucent composite mags for the M16 similar to those for the HK G36.
As a Marine with mulitple tours to iraq and afghanistan, it very well may not be a “Unit Open Purchase”. Marines also buy personal gear in which they trust or feel most comfortable with. I know I didnt roll with your “standard loadout”.
