During Kit Up!’s continued exploitation of the WikiLeaks data dump, we found two interesting reports dealing with SEAL units operating in Afghanistan.

Searching through for callsign TRIDENT, we ran across this matter-of-fact after action of the infamous OP Red Wings compromise of Mike Murphy’s SEAL team. It’s a terrible reminder of the danger US special operators assume as they move in small teams through areas rife with Taliban insurgents…

(3493)6/28/2005 CJSOTF reported TIC 13km S of FB Blessing (42S XD 79613 60831) at 0918Z.  NAVSOF element conducting SR Operations for OP Red Wings in contact.  Requesting CAS. 0943 Havoc 22 (1x B-52) on station.  CJTF76 authorized 4xUH from Jalalabad PRT with elements of KOA to depart for CJSOTF TIC, and 2xAH64s from BAF QRF authorized for CJSOTF TIC.  BAF QRF is W/U at 1035Z.  1152Z: 1x MH-47 from the QRF was shot down by ground fire while moving to last known location of NAVSOF.  Continue to SIGACT 11421. Remains of 2x personnel recovered. 1x person rescued and extracted to BAF, and 1x soldier missing, search in progress.

And when some media (the Guardian in particular) are reporting how the docs show evidence of a failing strategy, war crimes and a faltering Afghan security force, we find this amazing story of bravery buried in record #725. From the account below, we see a harrowing story of a SEAL team in contact for nearly four hours in mid-June 2004 with their spec ops partners from Lithuania. They fought off enemy snipers and insurgents, requesting an emergency resupply of ammo an hout after their first contact. A Special Forces detachment located nearby spooled up with 50 Afghan militia, seven operators and three Marines in a convoy of Hilux trucks and Humvees to help.

With A-10s buzzing overhead, the SEALs and Lithuanian commandos continue for two more hours to chase and engage the bad guys before they give up. Only one enemy KIA is reported.

6/15/2004(S//REL GCTF) CJSOTF REPORTS NAVSOF TIC 57K NORTH OF QALAT. AT 0455Z CJSOTF REPORTED TIC AT GRID 42S UB 1937 0974, 10K SW OF EARLIER CJSOTF TIC. TRYING TO WORK THRU THE DUST HAZE LOW VISIBILITY PROBLEM. 0531Z BOAR 01 (2XA-10) EXPENDING IN SUPPORT OF CJSOTF TIC. 0544Z NAVSOF IS REQUESTING EMERGENCY RESUPPLY OF AMMO. AT 0820Z CJSOTF REPORTS NO CONTACT FOR LAST 20 MINS. AT 0912Z SITREP FOR TIC: BDA ASSESSMENT 1 X EKIA.

The 91,000 pages of documents are littered with reports like this that show how our troops, our partners and our Afghan allies are fighting in Afghanistan. As more of these stories come out, the WikiLeaks dump could have the opposite effect of what it’s founder intended…

I don't think anyone disagrees that our troops have, and continue to, perform courageous feats on the battlefield. I don't see how that contradicts the reality of a flawed policy/strategy though.

The report I'm waiting to hear is the one where somebody flattens Wikileaks into mush.

Can someone translate a sampling of the shorthand above for us civilians. =)

e.g:

"TIC,
CJSOTF,
ACM=radar?,
ODA=operational detachment alpha?,
GRIP21 HAS EXPENDED 3X ROCKETS ISO NAVSOF TIC"

thanks!

grip21 is call sign for aircraft overhead. 3X rockets is obvious, In Suport Of Navy Spec Ops Forces. I belive CJSOTF ic combined Joint Spec Ops Task Force.

Sorry Tinker, happy to help…

TIC = Troops in Contact (firefight)
CJSOTF = combined joint special operations task force ('white' SOF)
ACM= 'anti-coalition militia'
ODA=operational detachment alpha (correct)
GRIP21 HAS EXPENDED 3X ROCKETS ISO NAVSOF TIC = "Grip 21" is a callsign for an aircraft — it has shot 3 rockets — in support of — Navy special operations forces — in a firefight…

I am glad that the private is already in the brig and I hope he is branded a traitor. Hope it was worth putting fellow soldiers and coalition forces at risk. Not to mention the brave informants that have been TRUTHFUL to our soldiers. I hope the US brings the Wikileaks editor to justice. By publishing these docs (secret or top secret aside) they are basically putting our true heroes at risk of death and he should stand by his decision.

Lets revisit communications security. How is it that a PFC had access to such a wealth of classified msg's from apparently multiple sources.

Surely everybody knows that these days leaks are government sacntioned??? Its all about PR and this sort of stuff is well targeted to give a limited glimpse of 'secret stuff''. Note how they are withholding the big stuff if there is any.

How did the PFC have access to the classified msg's you ask…well here is your answer. All AAR's are put into the secret side of the network via falconview. Its just a program that you put all your daily acitivites or any TIC's in. The PFC more than likely worked in a TOC and had SIPR access as part of his duties. Anybody with SIPR access has access to falconview..from the TOC all the way up to the White House. I think it was said that he was brining in CD's and burning data to them…(that is how he got the video out). Pretty easy to get this stuff…just about all the stuff that I read has been dailies and TIC reports that have been released.

I think Israel has an excellent approach to handling leaks like this from outside sources too bad we do not!
And as for that little twit masquerading as an adult, well he is being in a Quantico Brig right now. This twit joined the Army and has the gall to compromise the lives of fellow members of military. Guys like the Seals and other special operators deserve much better that to be compromised by some bleeding heart liberal and some nitwit who I am not sure if he has marbles or sand in his head or maybe he was dropped on his head too often as a baby.
I would like to know how got his hands on all this information and if he had a crypto clearance who ever did the BI should get new glasses and a hearing aid; because they sure did miss the boat on this one.

Thanks to all of you standing guard on freedoms wall and I hope the "most wish for is the least you receive" always and forever.

Be well

Going after WikiLeaks really isn't appropriate. For one, they are based in Sweden, and are outside of US jurisdiction. Admittedly, the CIA could pretty easily have them assassinated, but that's also isn't really appropriate. Setting the president that it's okay to murder civilians in another country for leaking classified material is a bad idea. None of us would be angry at WikiLeaks if they leaked documents concerning operations by the Chinese or Russians military, or Sceintology earnings, or the BP oil spill (all of which they have), so we really can't get on them for spilling our secrets. The blame for this rests solely upon the shoulders of the Solider who did it and the command policies that allowed it to happen. Once you begin to censor the free press, you begin to slide down a very slippery slope.
