Barrett Unveils New Multi-Role Adaptive Design Sniper Rifle

by Christian on October 27, 2010 · 12 comments

Though the name “Barrett” has become synonymous with the .50 cal, bolt action sniper rifle that’s fast become a Hollywood mainstay and combat performer alike, the company announced the debut of a new rifle at this year’s Association of the US Army show in DC.

Called the Multi-Role Adaptive Design sniper rifle, or MRAD, the rifle looks a lot like the stripped-down design of the M82 SASR, but is chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum, a popular mid-range round advocates say the Army should have gone with for its XM2010 instead of the .300 WinMag. The MRAD incorporates all the latest rail, buttstock, barrel modularity and magazine volume designs and molds it into a bolt-action chassis.

Our boy Glenn Anderson got a short brief on the new rifle at the show so be sure to check out his video below.

Makes much more sense than the XM2010. Sniper tech should be in this order, 6.5 or .308, 338 Lapua, 81mm/120mm mortar, 155 howitzer, 750 lb smart bomb. That combo will handle enermy snipers and other targets at multiple ranges

ive heard great things about .338 Lapua. Find it wierd Barrett wouldn't give it a Barrett .416 chambering.

The .416 Barrett cartridge is based on the .50BMG cartridge, requiring a much larger platform.

it's propably just a newer M98B, but you cant keep on calling it the upgraded/newerC-version or whatever.
there comes a time when you have to ditch the old name so you can start a new productcycle.
just look at geman cars, they are basically the same car for over 40 years but every once in a while they give it a new name to boost sales.

I would love to see this new Barratt go head to head with the Accuracy International AWSM but I'll have to wait a while before one gets over here to the U.K. I suppose.

Ask any sniper, the 338 Lapua is a fantastic round but it needs a good weapon for it to really work it's magic. i wish Barratt the very best of luck with their new baby.
