Red meat for the
Kit Up! crew... Just thought I'd href="http://www.military.com/news/article/army-mulls-women-in-combat-arms-units.html">draw
your attention to the story we're running on the front page of
Military.com this morning
...

The Army
is studying whether to open combat arms units to female Soldiers,
the Army's top officer said Jan. 6. "We're looking at revising the
policy," Gen. George W. Casey Jr. told a breakfast gathering of the
Association of the U.S. Army in Arlington, Va. "We've had some work
going on for a while, and that'll double back up to the secretary,
I would think, in the next couple of months." Women are currently
barred from infantry, armor and Special Forces branches, Casey
said. He did not say whether the Army is considering opening up all
three areas to women, but he did say the study looked at the
possibility of women in infantry.
I see lots of
problems with this. But what about tanks and armor? Could that be a
problem for women? I can understand the "humping an M240B up a
mountain and engaging in a three-hour firefight" argument for
infantry. But even Special Forces. If you can do the qualification
course, should it matter if you're a man or woman? Are there jobs
within the combat arms branches that are less physical that women
could fill? I just don't know...but it's at least worth an
intelligent conversation about it... I've seen pretty burly female
door gunners in Marine Corps 46s. I've been on week-long patrols
with female HHC Soldiers tagging along for female civilian searches
getting into firefights during ambushes and holding their own. But
I've never seen one kick in a door... First women in fighters and
attack planes. Now women on subs. Is it inevitable? src="http://static.polldaddy.com/p/4352463.js"
