Restrepo for an Oscar -- UPDATED

The team at Kit Up! would like to formally nominate the kick-ass film "Restrepo," produced by Sebastian Junger and Tim Hetherington, for best documentary at the Academy Awards.

We heard several months back there was some "Oscar talk" surrounding the movie, which tracks the deployment of 2nd Platoon, Battle Company, 2nd Battalion, 503 Airborne Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne BCT in the super-hot Korengal Valley of Afghanistan's East.

I saw the movie, liked it (but didn't LOVE it) and interviewed some of the key players back during their big media push last summer. I didn't get the chance to talk to Junger, who wrote a companion book called War (which I HIGHLY recommend), or Hetherington (who also published a book of his pictures, which is highly recommended by a war photog I've embedded with) at the time...but maybe if they get a nomination, there'll be a second round.

Restrepo was nominated by the Director's Guild of Americafor best documentary (along with one on Eliot Spitzer and the makings of the 2008 financial meltdown) in mid-January. But it's unclear what this means in terms of the Academy Awards. The DGA will present its awards on Jan. 29.

The Academy will formally nominate its best of 2010 tomorrow morning. This thing sure kicked Hurt Locker's butt, and we all know what happened with that one...

[EDITOR'S NOTE: Documentary Feature: "Exit through the Gift Shop," ''Gasland," ''Inside Job," ''Restrepo," ''Waste Land."]
