USASOC Plans SCAR Conversions

by Christian on June 3, 2011 · 7 comments

Kit Up! obtained a copyof the SOFIC brief on USASOC’s plan for future weapons to 2017. In it, we noticed an interesting piece of the assault rifle plan that concurrently runs a caliber conversion kit for the Mk-17 along with continued fielding and sustainment of the SCAR heavy.

The slide also shows the Mk-16 going out of circulation and USASOC taking a look at the potential Big Army improved carbine.

There’s also some stuff in there for you operators out there who hang a bunch of furniture on your AR. Take a look and let us know what you think.

Correct me if I have interpreted this wrong, but is the Mk-16 being phased out in preference for making the Mk-17 a dual-caliber weapon?

However the Mk-16 is being phased out in favor of the heavy AND the USSOC will still use M-4 for 5.56mm weapons.

I also point out there seems to problems with the Improved carbine Program since its being delayed constantly. I think the improved M-4 will be selected.

The improved M-4 is definitely the choice that is most likely.

If anything, they have made the point that whatever the IC chooses, they expect the Improved M4 as the logical result. Bureaucratic inaction is a good money bet, and their skillset is to know how to take advantage of it.

I wonder what's going on with the Mk20 SCAR marksman version? Last i read they were supposed to start rolling out last month.

You should note that this briefing was from USSOCOM, not USASOC.
