IMINT: Inside Libya’s weapons stockpile

by Jack Murphy on August 22, 2011 · 35 comments

A few months ago some pictures came out in the press as Libyan rebels began capturing some of the military’s warehouses that contained large amounts of war material.  I went ahead and labeled the crates and weaponry that was visible.  Please leave a comment if you see something I missed!

Okay I know this may be the wrong place for this but now that the rebels have taken most of the capital what's going to happen to lybia? I only bring it up because it relates to where these stockpiles could go.

Could be true, could not be true.

Whatever gains they make are irrelevant right now.

The rebels and the loyalists have a history of breaking/routing/retreating.

Until someone gets smart enough to do something tactically sound, it'll be one huge seesaw.

I wonder how many Green Berets are in Libya right now. The country must be full of them…

I'm sure these stocks were used to help the rebels finally waltz into Tripoli but I do wonder what will become of these war materials moving into the future. The path that some of this stuff takes is convoluted to say the least. Remember how the Soviet stocks that the IDF captured during the 6-Day War ended up being funneled via USAID (and others) to the Muj in Pakistan to fire that Soviet ammo back at the Russians? God only knows where this stuff will wind up in the long term…

I'm guessing the T-55 ammunition is somewhere else?

Battalion Commander August 22, 2011 at 7:05 pm

also kinda surprised that the loyalist forces didn't try and disable/destroy these munitions first

The frightening box is the SA-7 – bad news if they get near an airport.

I only see "tractor parts"

.50 cal is probably 12.7×108mm, the Soviet heavy machine gun round

I wouldn't worry about surplus ammo falling into the wrong hands… Between the "spray and pray" tactics and the traditional "shoot the sky to teach it a lesson" celebration, they've probably only got 5 rounds left.

I forgot where I saw the article (probably stratigypage) but it looks like we have actually killed off alot of the spray-in-pray and at least in afganastain, we're now running into a slight increase in accurate fire from muj that grew up listning to granddad talk about how they snipped so and so at such and such distance, because before the automatic afganistain was known for very accurate riflemen. Probably missed/mixed-up/dropped a few facts but that was the gist of the article as I remember it. Let the snipping begin :D

Could be an Italian made Spectre SMG

Nope. Beretta M12s, Italian SMG. It's distinctive matching grip and foregrip and tubular profile.

orly? August 23, 2011 at 12:11 pm

1st one perhaps
2nd one spectre
