Frog Lube: So Good You Can Taste It…Literally

by Brandon Webb on November 28, 2011 · 49 comments

Frog Lube. It works and will not send fish belly up....get some.

So a good friend, fellow surfer and SEAL teammate Larry turned me on to FrogLubeI’ve known about it for a while, but it took me a while to run out of my regular lube and give this stuff a try.  I actually bought some when I went shooting last (the HK USP post).  One cleaning session and I’m convinced this stuff is legit.  Not to mention it’s environmentally friendly (very cool); you can actually swallow the stuff with no problem (we don’t recommend this of course).

As a surfer I try to avoid surfing after the rain because of storm drain run-off, so I appreciate the green factor also.  More importantly, the stuff just plain works. Larry just sent Kit Up the full gambit for me and the team to take a look at.  We’ll also do some giveaways in December and let you guys judge for yourself.  Out here-Brandon

From their Website

FrogLube is a revolutionary bio-based gun cleaner, lubricant and preservative (CLP) product made from food-grade ingredients all obtained exclusively from US suppliers. It is a new “green” product developed for government use by San Diego-based Audemous, Inc, a company that evaluates products in the emerging environmental, safety and health sector.

If you want to eat gun grease or oil you should be smart enough to own guns.

I've been using Froglube for a little over a year now ever since a recently retired SOC gave me the entrails of a paste tub and it has been working magic on everything. I'll shoot roughly 90-180 rounds of 5.45×39 through my AK all I ever have to do is wipe off the piston, muzzle brake, gas tube and bolt face, run one patch through the bore which takes out 95% of the carbon, bore brush, one more patch to get the trace loose carbon, then another patch to lubricate. A friend didn't believe all the carbon was coming loose so we used some of his carbon eliminator and the patch was nearly perfect. I reapplied some Froglube, the parts in the oven at 130F and then threw it back together. Not to mention the action is nearly as smooth as my bolt gun and the trigger feels the same as my Jewell in my 700. It's totally worth the money.

I just started using it and have been very impressed…still can't believe it's organic…

I won't use anything that is praised as revolutionary but without explaining how it works (the given explanation is vague and pseudo-scientific). Too many quacks out there trying to sell their snake oil. If it really is as great as proclaimed somebody will provide an objective analysis sooner or later.

Started using this year on my Sig 229 and AR15.. You really notice that the metal of the weapons feel smoother and the actions sound a bit more quiet than normal…Clean up is mucho easier, just as stated above…. Cool stuff..

Hoppes #9 has been working for almost a century, and it smells good enough to use as an aftershave. Break Free CLP also works well. Both are inexpensive and have stood the test of time. If I want green gun lube/cleaner than I can use Ballistol. If Froglube is still around and has a good reputation in 2041 I might give it a try.

gunslinger6 November 28, 2011 at 6:37 pm

I agree with you there Moondog, Hoppes #9 is the way to go and I dont think I will be trying this.

Reply

jrexilius November 29, 2011 at 9:09 am

While I tend to be conservative with kit changes we are talking about cleaner/lube here. $5 or whatever it is to give it a try and find out seems worth it to me considering the advances in materials science and chemistry in the last two decades there are bound to be some improvements to be found somewhere.

It's also worth noting that propellant compounds (as gun powder is called) have evolved over the last 5 decades. Although I'm sure the fine people at Hoppes have kept on top of those changes it's always worth taking a fresh look at things.

gunslinger6 November 29, 2011 at 9:50 am

jrexilius- I can not argue with your point, if its $5 or whatever nothing lost if i do not like. You are right I will at least give it a try before I refuse to use it. Next time I am out picking up lube/cleaner I will pick some up. I will be the first one back here to let everyone know if I have been converted to FrogLube over Hoppes so we will see :)

Break Free=crapola. I'LL DEFINITELY give this a try.

Agree'd, I'm a Hoppes #9 and Break-Free user, and they work really well, but I'm willing to try new products, especially if it will help me clean my rifles faster… if not, then no harm done and I just go back to my old stuff… it's worth a shot, not like you have to trade a kidney for it….. right?

Brandon- Just checked out their website, I see they state that Marcus Luttrell also recommends this stuff. Also I did not notice in article above, it only said developed in San Diego, but it is made in the USA. Since jrexilius arguement that I responded too earlier, that it wouldnt hurt to try it I am actually looking forward to trying it after checking out their website.

Our company has been selling FrogLube since the July 2010. To date I have eaten about a pound and a half of FrogLube during my demonstrations at gun shows. Having a CLP that works great and is safe enough to eat should be important to all of us, as we are bombarded with many toxins throughout our lives. Go look at the MSDS for Hoppes #9 and compare it to the MSDS for FrogLube for a real eye opener.

I too have been selling FrogLube for a while now and have used it as a Lip balm, skin conditioner, rash healer, sunburn alleviator, rust inhibitor, insect bite healer to it’s advertised use as a CLP. IT HAS NOT LET US DOWN YET!!! We have been using it on weapon systems as large as 25mm deck guns to as small as airsoft guns. It does as it says…IT WORKS..

That HAS been done, but let’s concentrate of firearms cleaning and lubrication, also great on knives, locks, hinges, handcuffs, motorcycle and bicycle chains…just don’t put it on your brakes:)

I have been using FrogLube for approx. 6 months after I see them at SHOT. I though it was just another “snake oil” until I pulled my head from my *** and gave it a try. I brought some with me to Iraq as well to use on our pistols and some of the AK’s. This stuff works. I used recently in the Magpul Dynamics Carbine 2 Course where I used my personal built Bravo Company 11.5″ SBR with suppressor. I ran approx. 2100 rounds trhough the weapon with minimal lubing and no cleaning other than wiping off the BCG. I experienced ZERO malfunctions. I also didn’t get nasty oily blowback in my face as I usually do with other petroleum based products when shooting suppressed.

I will continue to use FrogLube until something that it better comes along. Biodegradeable, pleasant smell, lube that doesn’t run all over until it’s needed. What’s not to like?

EOD Bombbuster December 6, 2011 at 10:31 pm

My mail today had a fresh smell to it; unfortunately that was a sign that both sample tubes of Frog Lube had burst and leaked out. Thankfully, it was only bills.

I haven’t had a chance to use it on any weapons, but I can attest to the breath freshening ability. It tastes like Wint-O-Green life-savers with a hint of Icy-Hot. For some reason it reminds me of my grandfather’s aftershave. Thanks for the flash back. If it works as well at lubing weapons as it does of fighting halitosis, it will be great.

Thanks for the samples.

I finally got the chance to “Frog Lube” my AR and take it for a test spin. (Sorry, that sounds kinda dirty)

Only ran 200 rounds through it; which would not normally involve a full cleaning, but I wanted to see how FL performed.

I can sum it up with two key areas: Gas key area required a wipe down and it was shiny. Even more impressive was the area aft of the bolt rings. A stern glance was all it took to clear the carbon and I was in business.

It might not have the nostalgic smell of Hoppes #9, and it may be a bit pricy for lube, but even your significant other wont complain about the odor and you save on the cost of elbow grease.

Now, if I could just find a way to apply it to my kid’s room’s, they could just wipe it down and the dirty clothes would fall into the laundry.

Thanks for showing me the light.

I first met Larry several years back. His FrogLube was passed along to me before I met him. I am so impressed with Larry’s product’s that they are now all I use on my firearms. Hunting, pistols and my DSArms Para-Congo.
I believe so much in Larry’s products that I introduced him to many of my contacts the first year he started going to the Shot Show.
I also use FrogLube on the o-rings of my flashlights, on my blades, inside my holsters etc..
I still connect Larry to my contacts.
For those that know me, I guard my contacts and only connect those I trust and believe in.
I also gave Larry a gift of one of the blades I make.

I was given free samples of a “98% Biobased CLP endorsed by Navy SEALs that is safe enough to eat, comes in a liquid and paste form and has a pleasant smell.” and it is called….. Seal1
http://seal1.net/index.html
It appears to be a clone of FL, any knowledge of this Brandon?
I use only Froglube and have for a while so I was surprised to see this other product.

These guys are local here in San Diego and since 2010 when I first got my hands on it , I have made it a must have in my kit. When one sees the price of a small bit of gunbutter or EWL and then sees this stuff for 8$ a JAR one tends to gravitate toward economy. I have in the past switched to synthetic motor oil for economical purposes but this seems to offer more. I see someone so convicted that he will taste the sheet right in front of your face and then show you an array of items that have yet to succumb to the sea elements that should have eaten them alive long ago…..sure sold the f*** outta me.
We have alot of rust causing mist that visits daily and for this stuff to put up its middle finger and dare it to keep coming around is beyond me….its works, its cheap, its made local, its 100% bio so much that it smells and tastes like the toothpaste I use everday….I mean what else could I ask for. I cant put gunbutter on my bread and I cannot use Mobil 1 as chapstick so I am sticking with Frog Lube until I find out otherwise. IMHO

I have been using Frog Lube for well over a year now. My cop son turned me onto it. It is fantastic stuff. Cleans, lubes and protects damn well. It is all I use now. Put it on, shoot cheap and dirty, wipe the gun down. That is basically it.

Hey FrogLube,
I just sent an email to your sales dept. (only because I found that before seeing the post here.) I’m a Gunner’s Mate in the US Coast Guard, and all I deal with is weapons. I’m stationed on our Country’s Northernmost Cutter, in Valdez, AK. If it can work here, it can work anywhere !!! I’d kill for some samples to try out on all types of weapons, from our service pistols, shotguns, ****… even on my 25mm deck gun !!! I’ll take pictures, and even write up a full statement provided you send me enough to actually TRY on that big beast. I would then like to submit my findings, a sample, and all pics that I take to our “big wigs” to see if it could get picked up by our branch as an “Official Cleaning Agent.” Again, this is going to take a lot of work on my part, but I need the product first. Get in touch with me soon !!!
Thanks FL !!
