SHOT 2013: American Snipers “Hides”

by David Reeder on January 18, 2013 · 9 comments

If you’re at NSSF/SHOT 2013 and you haven’t been by one of the American Snipers hides yet, try to do so within the next four hours. It’s hard to believe that I first started talking to Brian Sain, founder of that organization, ten years ago when it was he and a garage full of good kit and a big postage bill. Now, as of Wednesday evening (I don’t have numbers yet for Thursday) they’ve raised over fifty thousand dollars. It’s going to be a big week for them, which is a Good Thing – you’d be hard pressed to find a US unit anywhere that hadn’t received support from these guys at least once in the last decade, and I’m not sure you could find a more devoted group of guys in any similar group (equally dedicated perhaps, but not more dedicated).

There are five hides scattered through SHOT, manned by AS volunteers, Tac Girls and such respected military personnel as Ed Eaton and Ron Smith. They’re sponsored FN, Armalite, Leupold, US Tactical and of course the NSSF. They have an awesome rifle raffle going on ($10 per ticket, includes additional kit), an M16A2 silent auction and a combat shadow box silent auction (as well as some great pins, decals, patches et al available for a donation). Get by there and pick something up – the new patch and the anniversary coin are both bad ass.

Don’t mind the pink paracord securing the rifle, it was her idea to use it instead of OD.

I don’t know about the qualifications of Navy DMs from the ’60s but I earned my Naval Expeditionary Designated Marksman qual in September of 2009. It doesn’t have an official NEC code but that was one of the best courses I’ve been able to go through during my 10.5 years. We use a McMillan stocked, Crane accurized M14 with 10x Leuopold scope and focus on setting OPs and overwatches. Training is based on the USMC Scout/Sniper program minus the stalking and ghillie suits.

One question for Passmore. If you have the disposable money in the bank to afford a Barrett, why would you buy the other guns you say you own that are just average or less than average? To many holes in your story as written dude. There are extreme few ways that a Sailor can get better than shipboard marksmanship training. Most of that is attached to special cool guy units. No, being assigned to an Amphibious Assault Ship driving the Marines ashore on the landing craft is not one of those ways. Could I be wrong? May be, but I seriously doubt it. Go back to drinking your Kool-aid and getting fat on your couch.

It almost looks like Passmore was drunk, high or both when he wrote that comment, as it is all over the place! He needs to take some English language courses in addition to learning how to use the computer.

I understand, all a ship board Sailor had to do to qualify was stand on the fantail
and fire, if he hit the water he qualified. :-)
