GunVault's "TacVault"

GunVault, a division of Cannon Safes, has a new option for home-owners (or store-owners or whomever) wanting to store a long gun or three securely, but sufficiently available to retrieve quickly...something a little less obtrusive than a full-sized traditional safe, and simpler to access. This new option is the TacVault - it's a biometric capable safe you can tuck into a closet or other out of the way place.

The TacVault will hold pretty much any typical shotgun or AR breed of rifle and features an internal shelf for spare mags, a flashlight, whatever. It is not going to be secure your CheyTac while you're sleeping at night, not that anyone would wonder why you were clearing your home at 0330 with a .50. However a Remington 870, Scattergun Technologies, S&W 15T, Legion LF4...all of these would be good to go. You might even get away with your Kreigoff .470 Nitro Express if you live in a particularly troublesome neighborhood.

The TacVault is built of 14-gauge steel with a 12 gauge steel door, all of it fitted together precisely (Cannon kindly allowed me to visit their California facility recently and I can tell you they really are detail conscious). You can use what they call the No-Eyes® keypad or a biometric fingerprint recognition scanner to get in quickly. (There is a backup override key and a security cable as well.) An audio and LED low battery indicator protect against direct tampering and unexpected power loss.

I played with the TacVault (and some of their other models) while in LA and it really is impressive. Simple to set up, speedy access and easily understood operation (which is important, because I'm a borderline Luddite). I purchased a Microvault for handgun while I was there and I've been very pleased with it - it has become my TSA travel case, in fact.

Here's the big brain explanation of the locking mechanism and how the biometric dilithium crystal access thingamawhatsit works: "The TacVault Bio uses biometrics, specifically fingerprint recognition, to access the safe contents faster and more securely than ever before.  A high-performance algorithm is used to achieve speedy identification of enrolled fingerprints and at the same time has a very low False Reject Rate (FRR).  The self-learning algorithm adds new minutiae to the fingerprint templates each time a user touches the fingerprint sensor, which decreases the likelihood of FRR, updates slight changes that might occur over time to an enrolled fingerprint and helps diminish variations between the enrolled fingerprints.  The system can hold up to 10 fingerprint templates."

In all seriousness though this may really be something some of you will like. With all the assorted spawn and minions coming in and out of my house I've never been comfortable having my long guns readily available. Keeping them in a monster safe is fine, except doesn't do me much good for having one near to hand if I need it - and though pulling the bolt carrier group out to store separate from the rifle is an option, it really doesn't speed things up much. I will be putting one of these on one end of my closet. It's unobtrusive, doesn't take up too much space and will more than adequately secure the weapon.
