BOULDER CITY, Nevada -- It looks like something RoboCop would carry, but SilencerCo LLC., has decided to put its Maxim 9 integrally suppressed pistol on the civilian market.

SilencerCo came out with the futuristic-looking, 9mm sidearm about two years ago and the interest has been growing ever since, Matt Pinnell of SilencerCo said at SHOT Show 2017.

“When we came up with the idea, a lot of people said it wasn’t possible,” he said. “It’s in production right now, and it will be on the shelves this April. The interest from the general public has been extremely high.”

The Maxim 9 is 10.75 inches long and weighs 2 pounds five ounces, but it used to be a lot heavier, Pinnell said.

“The weight when we first created it was really substantial,” he said. “We just really shaved down a lot of the corners and edges.

“It’s 10.75 inches long, but much like our Salvo 12 shotgun suppressor, there are rails that run through the Maxim 9; you can actually take those rails, remove them and take out two of the baffles and bring the Maxim 9 down to 9.45 inches.”

Despite its size, holster companies such as Blackhawk have begun designing holsters for the Maxim 9.

An early version of the pistol was based on a Smith & Wesson M&P, but that’s all changed, Pinnell said.

“One of the earlier designs did have a Smith & Wesson M&P grip and it took M&P mags,” Pinnell said. “We didn’t want it to be an M&P; we didn’t want it to be a Glock. We have designed the whole thing, everything from the grip, to the suppressor part, to the trigger.”

The Maxim will retail for $1,500.

“When we were designing it, we realized this is so cool and unique, we could sell it for $6,000 easily and people would buy it,” Pinnell said. “But this isn’t a gun just for gun collectors. This is a gun for your neighbor, for a police officer.”
