Clean as a Whistle -- The OTIS tactical cleaning kit

During SAFS assembly, (sniper school for everybody) the old pros showed me the gun-cleaning tool that's issued for "SPECIAL military personnel" and is used by civilian professionals. It is designed so that you can PULL a med/loose patch to get the majority of contaminants out, or, the tightest patch you can imagine to clean the corners of the lands! You run a CLEAN patch through every time, not a piece of rope crammed with abrasive carbon, metal & crud that abrades your barrel! Even civilian pros would never use a dirty rope (it's clean for the first pass only, after that, it’s dirty bud.) Those in the know, use an OTIS. When you pull the coated cable, it’s not touching anything! The only thing touching the bore is a clean patch! Take care of your stuff properly, and it will take care of you. Oh, and it's all in one small pouch, the size of a sm. bagel, AND has everything you need to clean a 9 mm, 12 Ga., 7.62, or a 5.56, patches, oil, and a BORE LIGHT!

I think this is the best cleaning kit I have seen yet. We normaly make our own combination of items in a small bag; but this has a well thought of usefulness for the beginner or expert shooters

Tell me, how do I go about purchasing one (or more for my friends/relatives) of these?

I've had an Otis kit for a couple years now - best field cleaning kit I've ever owned. CheaperThanDirt.com looks like they have most of the Otis stuff. If you order one, buy extra patches with it. It's worth getting theirs just so they will fit in the case.

These work well: until the jag breaks off of the cleaning cord resulting in a tightly plugged barrel and nothing to push it out with.

Our unit issued out "standard issue" cleaning kits. Aside from the pouch the items appear to be the same as what we've been using in the Army for years. Where's the difference?

By far the best tacticle kit out there, I wouldn' need a thing except the kit in most situations

In the Timberwolf survival school; recommend this as part of one of the items for the students. The students I teach are young, middle age and older ladies and gentlemen, with a great interest to survive in a complicated that may arise. Surviving on the edge world we live you need to be well equipped, many that have attended military and civilian alike found the courses and advance courses and the equipment selected to be top notch. I teach escapee and evasion and natural and man made disasters for any place in the world. All the equipment is issued like a tool bock and the student take it with them I also recommend this cleaning kit along with a list of item I have packed for the students in the 4-week courses we recommend OTIS Tactical cleaning kit its outstanding

Guys, look into investing into a bore snake. Do a google search o "bore snake" and the weapon name. You don't need to use patches with it. Just drop it in and pull the "snake" through the barrel from the other end. http://projectboresnake.org/ is a link to something that tries to help service men and women with bore snakes. This site sells them for all types of weapons (and M16s): http://www.gunaccessories.com/GunMate/index.asp
Hope it helps guys, it's done wonders for my SA XD 45 and Star BM 9mm

Folks, these were issued to my unit as part of RFI. I haven't had the chance to try it out yet, but don't go buy something Uncle Sam's going to give you.

i'm a saw gunner in afganistan and i cant tell you how many times my otis kit saved my but.it's small enough that i can easily carry it in my utility pouch and its tough enough to stand up to climbing mountains with me.i would dream of using anything else.

Had an Otis kit until I had a stuck case in my M-4. I could not get the case out with the Otis kit or even with a leatherman. Had to use an issue steel rod kit to remove case. Found out some vinyl coating from coated cable was shaved by chamber and melted in the chamber after firing a bit causing a very stuck case. Bore Snake with issue steel rod kit is my choice.

I have not had the opportunity to play with the OTIS kit. I was a CATM instructor for the AF for 8 years, and I highly recommend Bore Snakes. I use them for my personally-owned firearms as well as my duty issued, and I have no complaints. They clean so much quicker than the standard cleaning methods (i.e. cleaning rods/patches/brushes). That being said, I would not rely solely on just the Bore Snake for cleaning accessories. I carry a standard issue military cleaning kit, however I added a 9mm, 5.56mm, and 7.62mm Bore Snakes. As someone mentioned in an earlier post, the cleaning rods aren't just for cleaning, they can also be used to clear barrel obstructions. The Bore Snakes are nice because they wrap up small, and easily fit in the standard issue cleaning kit.

Bore Snakes are nice if all you will ever need to clean is the bore. Also when you pull a bore snake down the barrel, its dirty. You cant clean your star chamber, trigger group or upper receiver with a bore snake. I had this deluxe military kit for a year then bought the Military Elite because its so awesome.
