More Mad Max Weapons on the Libyan Front

Kit Up! friend and best selling author CJ Chivers strapped on his body armor and pulled out his notebooks and pen for a wild ride with the so-called Forces of Free Libya over the last couple weeks.

(Photo: Bryan Denton from the CJ Chiver blog)

He’s had a number of great dispatches on the New York Times’ At War blog and at his website about the gear and tactics being employed by the rag-tag group of anti-Gadhaffians. But the latest post left me gasping.

Looks like our friends tooling around in DShK-wielding Toyotas have started welding aircraft rocket pods to their technicals in hopes of matching Libyan army firepower.

When it comes to mounting aviation weapons systems on pickup trucks, these kinds of weapons are, in a word, a sight. They are also a fright. They seem to spring from some post-apocalyptic dream, and in the eyes of many rebels their mere presence among otherwise lightly equipped forces suggests promise and power. But this is not quite so. In truth, the men who fire them have little idea of how far these rockets fly, a limited ability to change their elevation, and, (depending on the makeshift mount), often have no ability to traverse them left or right. Often times, those who fire them fire them this way: They point the front grill of their truck in the rough direction of the intended target, and commence launching a barrage. The result is obvious even before the first rockets whoosh into the air. Those involved can make their high-explosive rockets go up. They have only the faintest sense of where the rockets will come down.

Yikes…

And Chivers brings up a good point later in his post when he makes the uncomfortable admission that since these things can’t in any way be even close to accurately fired, they border on the indiscriminate.

Now, isn’t that what NATO forces are dropping bombs in Libya — to protect civilians. How can we be assured that the Libyan Mad Max weaponry isn’t hitting the very people we’re trying to “protect?”

Many Libyan rebels – more spirited than experienced – nonetheless approve of their rocket brigades. With their almost sci-fi aesthetic, and the tremendous noise and show they make when fired, they are a morale-booster for troops who know little of effective tactics or of how modern weapons actually work.

No offense, but this is different from how these rockets work on aircraft how? Whenever you hear an aviation expert discuss the use of a system as a "suppression weapon" that means they can't hit anything with it. Unguided 2.75 rockets are suppression weapons.

Also it looks like some poor bastard has to go in back and pull on something to make it fire. Watch out for backblast!

Most likely a matter of touching some wires to a car battery because, I think, these types of rockets are fired electrically. If that's the case then you can easily have somebody sit in the cab and do it, have the battery by his feet with a wire or wires leading in from the window. But backblast would still have to be a bit of the problem, I can't help but to to think what kind of back blast they might receive as the rockets fly over the top of the cab, isn't that the reason why MLRS launch vehicles have armored shutters for all of the windows? Probably of even more concern is for anybody stupid enough to stand nor or, worse yet, behind the truck when it's firing its rockets and seeing the lack of training and discipline within the ranks of these rebel troops I can very well see some of them doing just that and getting fried for their efforts.

I have first hand experience in shooting 2.75" rockets at bad guys, and it is definitely an art. Nevertheless, a rocket landing outside of 100m of your intended target is either a bad rocket or a bad pilot.

Ummm…correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't most of the Anti-Gadhaffi people …civilians, too?

Never underestimate the rebels. In modern history they always end of winning, always.

Well I have to hand it to them, I don't think I'd ever be able to rig an S-5 pod to my Chevy and have it work.

well i understand that the anti-gadhaffi people are civilians also but those gadhaffi civilians they living a good life that is one of the reason why they like gadhaffi those who don't like gadhaffi are those who can't eat well like fidel castro if you worlk for the communism you live well and those who don't worlk for the communism you starve to death but democracy is different you worlk you eat not matter who is in power democrat or republican you eat that is the reason why they don't like gadhaffi because they have a president for 41 years think about it.

Your post is retarded because you cannot form a proper sentence or use punctuation.

Well on an Aircraft or helicopter, you have a guidance system, or you point the plane down towards the target, lead a little, make allowance for drop…etc, etc. These civilians don't have any of that Luxury. It's just out in front of them and very possibly they shoot way in front of or far behind them. Now if they dropped the elevation a bit, it might get exciting.

On helicopters these would be direct fire weapons. Seems like on these things, they're indirect fire weapons. Indirect suppression fire weapons. Like shooting a bottle rocket and hoping to hit your buddy's sandcastle instead of the sunbathing couple to his left.

That's scary.

What kind of pickups are they using? If memory serves me correctly, didn't the Chad army use recoiless rifles mounted on the backs of Toyota pickups against Lybia's T-34 Russian tanks and beat the crap out of them.

Recoil-less rifle is also more accurate too.

The one common mentality in the Middle East and Africa is use what ever is available and make a weapon out of it. The IED's and gun trucks are used out of necessity. This mentality leads to some unorthodox uses for weapons and explosives, but if it works, watch out. We have spent millions of dollars defending against IED's, they have made an impact. Most modern armed forces have difficulty defending against asymmetric warfare. Libya will be no different.

I think the nicest touch is the colors of the old Libyan flag painted on the side, complete with crescent and star. Hooray for our side!!

Plus, Toyota could advertise: "Our trucks are the choice of rebels, guerillas, terrorists, and general ne'er-do-wells world-wide!"

It's simple basics. Pop a couple rounds off and see where they hit. Voila point of aim point of impact. Come up on a target guestimate point of impact and pop one off see where it hits if need be throw in some kentucky windage & elevation. Pop off another if its off target adjust again if its on target let the rest of the pod rip. This goes all the way back to trebuchets & ballistas. The weapons may be modern but plain old dark ages techniques will make them quite useful. Even modern artillery has forward observers calling the coordinates & corrections. They walk the guns onto the target then its "fire for effect" time.

Okay, LAU pods and unguided rocket pods are aimed a little bit differently in aircraft than on the ground. In the air, on the HUD of the aircraft there is an aiming reticule…not that it's accurate, but yes it is a suppression weapon.

Now that being said…I find this hysterical…it's inginuativity at it's best.

Top ten reasons you know you’re using de-evolutionary weaponry
#10 You’re having fun now, but might not be in just a few seconds
#9 Your whole day could be ruined if you get a flat
#8 Your leader yells “fire the weapon” as he runs away
#7 Your comrade asks you which end is the dangerous one
#6 The clutter in the back of the vehicle fires before the weapon
#5 The driver flicked his cigarette into the back of the truck bed
#4 The tourists on the side of the road have stopped to see the best weapon yet
#3 Someone tells you that the spray paint symbols on the side of the truck aren’t hits, but misses
#2 You realize to shoot directly behind you the driver would have to turn the truck sideways
#1 You can’t tell if that red paint or blood from the last guy who tried to aim the device

im sorry but are humans in undeveloped countries genetically designed to be stupid. i swear American fifth graders could be more intelligent with the design and function of this stupid thing. even our cats and dogs can figure out how to open doors and stuff.

Kyle, with all due respect, your statement about "humans in undeveloped countries being genetically stupid" sounds like simple prejudice. These people– in this case, the anti-Khaddafi irregulars– are taking what little they have and making it work– while test scores put American 5th graders 17th among developed nations.

I have this vague memory of a bunch of folk from an undeveloped nation called North Vietnam being genetically smart enough to take on the troops of the world's richest nation, and another, both distant and recent set of memories of another underdeveloped nation called Afghanistan first fighting the then-powerful Soviet Union to a stagnated halt, and now repeating the process with US and other "genetically smarter" nations.

For that matter, although it was a bit before I served on active duty, I seem to remember a bunch of unsophisticated hayseed farmer types taking on one the most powerful nations on the planet and winning… under some general named George Washington. Genetic intelligence is not based on how developed a nation is, except in cases of nationwide severe malnutrition.
