IMINT: Tricked out Chinese Carbines

by Christian on July 7, 2011 · 138 comments

Our sister site Defense Tech forwarded an interesting post over to us that shows some kitted out Chinese sea raiders prepping for a mission.

In one of the first international defense deployments undertaken by the modern Chinese government, the People’s Liberation Army Navy is deploying sailors for visit, board, search and seizure missions in the Gulf of Aden to help secure civilian shipping in those pirate infested waters.

The China Defense Blog rightly notes that if you take a close look at the pics, you’ll see that some of the troops have attached vertical fore grips to their Type 95 carbines. As the CDB speculates — and we agree — this shows some loosening of regs and greater flexibility of customization by the operator.

We’re also intrigued by the double flashlight attachments. Could this be an IR beam and a white light combo?

To us this shows a degree of professionalism not usually seen in such a large, conscript army governed by totalitarian leaders — and even such a small thing should inform military planners who look at China’s future threat…or cooperation.

Also why are they pointing their weapons at each other? It looks like they have mags in to, i dont know what the Chinese train their troops but that is no bueno.

I don't think that they are pointing their weapons at each other, it's just a perspective thing combined with depth of field. In other words, it's just an optical illusion created by the camera.

Reply

Riceball July 8, 2011 at 12:03 pm

But at least the NWU actually serve a purpose and aren't intended as a field/combat uniform which the Chinese camo apparently is. NWUs were designed to hide dirt & grease, not the wearer, what are these supposed to do?

Likewise there is a lot of garbage US-made weapons on the market as well,

You sir are wrong. If you take any US military standard issue, I guarantee you it will beat any of Chinas air-soft weapons.

Reply

Bill July 9, 2011 at 10:37 am

…and I wouid appreciate citations or atleast factual claims as to why you would make that guarantee. I would tend to believe that US standard issue is better than PLA standard issue, but I have not fired any PLA weaponry, and neiither have many people.

I'm curious about the weaponry, not some nationalistic pissing contest.

AK's are a POS and the world knows it. The only reason they dont jam like the M-16 (and so on) is bc it is a loosly made gun without any precision involved.
There is a reason they've stuck to using IEDs and the sort.

I place my faith in the weapons we have.

Reply

nraddin July 11, 2011 at 5:38 pm

I can hit 4inch targets with open sites at 300m with my Romanian AK no problem. Is it as pinpoint accurate as my hunting weapons? No not even close, but it will kill a dude a normal assault rifle engagement ranges without an issue and is far more reliable than my M16a2.

Reply

Dumb Grunt July 12, 2011 at 2:02 am

Romanian AK's are different from the Chinese type 56, which are reliable; but they have a serious problem with accuracy. That is not including the very poor quality of Chinese Ammunition. It is reliable, in that it will fire , but accuracy suffers greatly. The subject in question is the country of origin; not design.

Anyone know anything about the cammo? The guy in front looks to be wearing US woodlands (pre-digital) and I don’t know where the blue/white cammo would work unless it is on an iceberg (and a small one at that to have the water reflected up through it). What a hodge podge of load bearing equipment. You would think they were responsible for buy their own. Olive Drab, black, neither color really working with a light blue suits and black rifles.

Reply

Kevin July 8, 2011 at 1:22 pm

I would assume the uniforms are primarily to identify who is hostile / friendly. As for camo, many ships have white and/or grey paint. It is probably more effective than it would seem. The black and woodlandesque gear would be less effective for shipboard ops.
That being said the guy with the drop leg holster has much more kit than anyone else in the picture. I doubt his loadout is indicative of the rest of his unit.
Lastly I don't think even the Chinese believe these guys are top notch. They are obviously working on getting there though and investing in equipment and training as well as attempting to get some practical experience dealing with the Somali pirates.

We are teaching them about manufacturing. They steal any secrets left on a computer they can get their hands on. And I believe they have something like 3 mil males turn 18 every year.

Their ambitions and internal need for growth and natural resources are an ever increasing outward pressure.

As this is the first time they've actually projected power beyond their borders, it;s worth paying close attention to.

I'd say they're regulations are still being pulled back by propaganda…

just paraphrasing some stuff i remember being debated online:
"why don't they have body armor?"
response by chinese "body armor slows the soldier down and is useless"
months later, china issues body armor: "our body armor is superior to the US interceptor Body armor"

Chinese: "We have designed a round (5.8×42mm) that is ballistically superior to the 5.56x45mm and 5.45x39mm"
response: "Oh yeah? why is it still being issued in lacquered steel casings? the ballistic testings show that it lacks cavitation, and is solely reliant on penetration"
Chinese: "what do you think the modern military is equipped with? The US is off battling unarmored terrorists but this round is in preparation for real, global conflicts.

IMO this idea that china's tech is the best, no one can ever be better has got to stop, we don't even do that, otherwise Aimpoints, Frag-12s, FN firearms, Sigs, etc would never make our military great

it is really interesting to see the current set of technical and tactical developments taking place in china of late, they are not resting on any legacies and seem to be pushing forward with a real momentum. for me as an Australian this can be a little scary, but at this point they still seem to be a long way from being able to to bring any considerable pressure to bear. Every advancement the west makes, china pays attention too and notes it diligently, they have the manpower and funding to strive toward a goal, even if they lack some technical expertise it is only a matter of time before they catch up.

Panzerhund0311 July 7, 2011 at 11:46 pm

China is a very serious threat to the Western world. We as Americans have made China a powerful military world leader by our own mistakes made by businessmen and political leaders. Greed, ignorance and liberalism from Americans have done this. People can make fun of China all they want, but remember how they fought in Korea. Massive waves of soldiers that kept coming and coming. A huge army with leaders willing to send them to die and modern military tech sold to them by the USA during the Clinton era….Their military will soon surpass ours in no time flat, if it hasn't already. Building stealth aircraft, tanks, aircraft carriers and modernizing there army, navy and air force… Go ahead and keep making fun of "Made in CHINA" junk….It should read…Sold by the USA, Made in China to kill the USA….I don't know about you guys, but I fear China more now then I ever feared the Soviets….is it propaganda? I don't think so…. I don't see too many Chinese Americans joining the US military…I don't recall any Chinese Americans while I was in the service…and before anyone calls me a racist, I do know the difference between Asians and the counties that they come from.

A lot of my close friends joined the USMC, all Chinese Americans (in fact, one of them was the marine that put the US flag covering Saddam's face [statue] during the beginning of the invasion of Iraq). The reason you don't see a lot of them joining the service is because its viewed as being an unrespectable job in China.
In terms of social hierarchy, the soldier is traditionally ranked below the farmer (i.e. if you couldnt do anything else with your life, you were in the military)

Whenever gossip comes up about a parent's kid, and people say that they joined the military, the response is still the same (something along the lines of "oh, so he fucked up in life and is trying to fix it now")

I'd agree with you that China is still a formidable fighting force. Especially if you take into account they pushed us back with bolt action rifles and flags back in the Korean war. Now they all have automatic rifles, and are better trained (as much as people laugh at this statement, if the smalles target a chinese soldier can hit is a car at 50m, think about a horizon in a wave attack sending all this lead downrange.)

HOWEVER, what I'm more afraid of in life is China asking for their money back, they don't really have much to gain from attacking the US

Reply

Dvaid Lam July 8, 2011 at 2:52 pm

You do not recall Chinese American in the service doe not mean anything. I am Chinese American and have served three years from 66-69 with half of my time in Vietnam. Many Chinese American that I knew served honorably as well.
To put China in the proper perspective, China is not the same as the one we knew 30 years ago in spite of all the ignorance hypes going on this blog.
I can't understand why we as a nation always have to create adversaries and to justify our military actions and spending billions on arms instead of putting money on education and infrastrures.

Getting aside the fact that China is, and it will be a threat to the US global military dominance, perhaps for decades to come. The fact that our armed forces are been set to deal with this threat as soon as we are done in Afghanistan. And that you can say what ever you want about how crappy a Chinese soldier is compared to an American soldier, even though we have been fighting guys the Middle East who fight us in sandals, while holding a cigar in their mouth and an AK on their hand for over a decade, and they don't seem to want to surrender. Getting all of that aside…

I am truly surprised that the very first comment on this post was so damn racist and ignorant. And that there were even more comments like it after that. I guess Kit-Up! has their reasons why not to censor this posts. Perhaps not to infringe on anyone's freedom of speech. But it still surprises me when I see it. I guess I am still young…

Getting back on topic. I still believe the US has the mightiest military in the world. And you don't get so damn powerful by under estimating your adversaries. And China, just as much as they have been trying to keep up with us, we have been trying to leap ahead of them. Only time will tell whether or not this will turn in to another cold war. But even then, I am optimistic, since we have a proven track record winning those kinds of war as well.

While people sit back all smug making racist comments about the Chinese (and Chinese-Americans), the Chinese are busy buying up loads of influence in Africa and South-East Asia by offering loans, development aid, engineering and technical expertise at bargain-basement prices (and they only have to point to themselves as the greatest success story to sell themselves). In return, they're going to get their hands on oil, mineral and other natural resources that the West is going to be after as well (what do you think is going on in Nigeria and South Sudan?). That's why the Chinese Navy is now off the Horn of Africa. Laugh now – cry later.

Reply

Morgan July 10, 2011 at 1:00 pm

It's not adding up because you're not concentrating. Underestimating the enemy gets you killed. My point was that advanced technology like metal detectors and armored vehicles become liabilties themselves when the detector can't find the low metal trigger of an IED that wouldn't be there in the first place were it not for the fancy armored humvee scooting about like it owns Afghanistan. The US army has such a tech hard-on that it's only realising now what the average GI's gear weight is doing to his joints. Plus, the search for this months most fashionable camo is a laughing stock. Half the world had a little wet sh*t when the Chinese announced a missile that can sink carriers and their military, although under trained, remains one of the largest in the world. Maybe jarheads like 0311 should stop spending al their damn time at cracker barrel and start reading intel reports by analysts.

Will China win a war against the US if conflict between the nations ever arises? Who can tell. In the meantime, grunts need to stop pretending like China isn't a global power and start acting like professional soldiers. Right now they're acting like they can't get shot by Type 95's.

Reply

As for the chinese, the whole "army vs army" issue notwisthstanding (China certainly doesn't aim at playing the US game, anyway), when it comes to the "fighting chinaman", please, remember that during the Korea war, a more numerous, but vastly under-equipped chinese force initially *overran* and pushed back the US, and then fought it to a standstill, through better fieldcraft, better mobility (on foot, often), and sheer aggressiveness.
China is not ten feet tall, BUT, as you wrote, "grow up", we all live in the real world, not in some comics books universe. The little yellow men should not be underestimated, no more than the little brown men, or any other men, actually, small or big.

Reply

Morgan July 10, 2011 at 1:08 pm

Incorrect: selective national mandatory service (basically a draft), with officers being all volunteer. That's because they just can't possibly conscript everyone. Man power fit for military service right now exceeds 300 million males and more than 300 million females. About 10 million people turn the age limit to serve, annually.

Also, women are allowed combat roles.

Because the Vietnam vets who hated the AR glorified it to no end so now everyone who will never touch a SCAR thinks its Godsend…..

The only Chinamen I have met in the military were in the Air Force or in Admin. Not really the fighting types. And the only beautiful Chinese women I have met were those mixed by latin blood or White. Nuf said. These are observations not racism, there's a difference, you PC hom0s!

"To us this shows a degree of professionalism not usually seen in such a large, conscript army"

Of course they are pointing their weapons at each other.

Reply

Riceball July 11, 2011 at 11:04 am

They aren't pointing their weapons at each other, it's just an optical illusion created by the camera's depth of field. You have to remember that a camera sees things differently than we do which is why you can do simple depth of field tricks like making yourself look like you're holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa or how they made regular people appear to be 3' – 4' tall hobbits in the Lord of the Rings movies. Same thing is going on here.

d-ass, look at the line on the floor and follow it to the other side, they are pointing at each other.

Now it seems too many people of low intelligence that are able to voice there mindless opinions on this site. Kit up used to a have a very professional feel, and the comments were never too far off from the topic. There are too many Armchair generals, airsofters, kids, inbred morons and people who have no experience in the subject matter at hand that voicing their opinions. If you don't have anything relevant to add to the discussion of the article, Please keep you f*ucking mouths shut…Foreign Affairs and Politics should not be coming up in article about some China-men with modified Type-95s gearing up for a training mission and or raid…

But that's what dumb people do… they talk about what they don't know, and the sad thing is that they don't know what they don't know… Kind of a like a Rumsfeldian unknown unknowns… Sigh… this country is full of idiots these days. I thought the 80's was bad.

Kitup should seriously close the comments for this post. Almost nothing being written here is relevant, just a bunch of elite internet armchair commandos who get a hardon bashing China and posting blatant racism.
I'd bet even a starving Nork conscript could beat the shit out of these fat little kids running their mouths on here.

And no, I am not Asian.

What in my post is expertise required on? I'm not commenting on the quality of the PLA gear or the training or whatever. And yes, odds are people who go online and post crap like "hurrr dem chinaman got small ding dongs" are probably not world class intellectuals.

Reply

And honestly, I don't care if you or your fellow internet warriors "listen" to me.

Reply

crackedlenses July 11, 2011 at 9:07 pm

Then what are you in a tizzy about? If you don't like what you are hearing, then don't listen. If you don't think we will listen to you, then why are you bothering? I'm just curious; besides, I don't make comments about the Chinese soldiers anatomy, I just don't think much of their military training…….

Reply

Envy III July 11, 2011 at 7:19 pm

Anatomy size is very important to pleasing women, this may explain why in the future the Chinese will subjugate everyone base on this penis-envy syndrome.

2. Venting. Seeing so much stupidity, it felt good to call it out.

It's amusing to read these down right dumb, racist and childish comments against China.

As an American I have no love for China and view her as possible enemy in the future. But I am well aware that as of this minute, China has already demonstrated her ballistic missile system able to shoot down satellites in low earth orbit. She has fielded three manned low earth orbit mission where her astronauts did EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity). That makes her number three in the world behind the US and Russia with such capability.

This site obviously is frequented by a good number of uneducated morons and armchair warriors.

The problem with any topic relating China's military/economic/scientific strength is that there seems to be two groups of extremes: Some people exagerrate China's power, making it seem like they are on the verge of being able to march into DC unopposed. then there is the crowd that totally dismisses anything Chinese as cheap, worthless, etc etc.

In WW11 we out produced everyone. Now all of our machinery, and jobs have been sent overseas. Try to find something for sale that is not made in China. A great deal of our military items are made in China. I don't fear China for their fighting force, but rather for their production capabilities. The forth world war will be fought with rocks.

You are such an optimist. The dumb comments are likely to have been made by people in their 20s' or 30s', maybe even 40s'. We've turned into a nation of infantile dimwits and parochial oafs, which is what the Chinese call a competitive advantage. The next decades are gonna be interesting.

You can laugh at the possibility of using a rifle "made in China" but there are those of us that remember surrendering our M-14's for the Army's "Matty Mattel" M-16's before they were even fully tested. Some of the "Made in China" AK-47's we took outof the mud outside of Khe Sanh still functioned without cleaning. They myth about the "superiority of firepower" died with the Army's "recon by fire" methods and the wasteful techniques that they generated. Ain't about the weapon but the guy behind it. That's why Marines have always have always risen to the challenge and overcome deficits…
